Community shows their support for rugby

The Elsburg Eagles Rugby Club hosted a successful rugby festival on Saturday.

Rugby teams and rugby supporters from across the East Rand travelled to the Elsburg Eagles Rugby Club on Saturday to take part in the club’s rugby festival.

The day’s activities kicked off half an hour later due to the cold but this did not dampen the crowds’ spirits.

“A big thank you to all the players and supporters who came out to support our festival.

“The event was a massive success, but we could not have done it without you all,” said Elsburg Eagles Rugby Club chairman, Tyron Smuts.

A number of teams participated in the festival, including Springs Rugby Club, Benoni Grizzleys Rugby Club, Brakpan Rugby Club, Bobbies Rugby Club, Boksburg Uile Rugby Club, Suikerbosrand Rugby Club, Pirates Rugby Club and Alberton Rugby Club.

“To the players, you guys really made us proud and it is a great privilege to have you all on the Eagles’ field,” said Smuts.

The club’s teams had a mixed barrel of scores, with the u-10, u-11, u-12, u-13 and u-18 teams winning their matches.

“I can see a huge success in the upcoming league,” Smuts said.

The last match was the highlight of the day, when coaches and fathers from the Eagles Rugby Club and Bobbies Rugby Club took to the field in an ‘oldies’ match.

Bobbies won the match 5-0.

The club now turns its attention to the upcoming league.
