Operation targets illegal immigrants and illegal taverns

The EMPD targeted undocumented people and illegal taverns in a CBD blitz.

The EMPD were out in full force last Friday, as part of their Bumper to Bumper operation.

Officers once again swooped on the Germiston CBD to clean-up the area of illegal tavern owners and undocumented people.

The special operation took place between 2pm and 10pm and 79 illegal immigrants, and one tavern owner operating illegally, were arrested.

“Metro police officers fine-combed the buildings on Railway Street, Webber Road, Jack Street, President Street, Knox Street, Meyer Street and Victoria Street,” said Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, spokesman for the EMPD.

“Undocumented men and women from Uganda, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Somalia, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo were arrested.”

A 46-year-old illegal tavern owner was apprehended in Webber Road and 30 cases of beer, 19 bottles of spirits and two dozen bottles of wine were seized.

All the arrested suspects were detained at the Germiston Police Station and were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court last Monday.
