VLC paddler claims third spot in tricky race

Local paddler shoots treacherous rapid to claim a podium position.

The Johannesburg Canoe Club hosted a river race on a very tricky, technically challenging section of the Klip River.

The race started at Buksies Holiday Resort, in Walkerville, and finished 34km further on, in Daleside, at Ixoxo Manzi, last Sunday.

With the bitter cold sweeping through the province, as well as the highly technical and treacherous rapids on that section of the river, a very small field started out and, after some cold or exhausted paddlers withdrew, as well as a couple with boat damage, only 20 boats finished the difficult distance.

Paddlers from the South took advantage of their familiarity with this section of river.

Colin Ledwaba, from Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC), finished in the third podium position, as well as being the first u-23 paddler to finish, having saved time by shooting the most treacherous rapid of the race, successfully.

He finished in a time of two hours 49 minutes.

Other VLC finishers included Richard Cele, Katiso Hlahatsi and Roland Smith.
