Four dead, 11 injured when fleeing criminals crash into taxi

Multiple injuries in taxi accident on the N3.

Four people have died and 11 others have sustained serious to moderate injuries after a taxi overturned on the N3 North bound, opposite the PPC cement factory in Germiston, at about 1.10pm.

According to Wilfred Kgasago, the spokesman for the EMPD, the taxi was hit by a vehicle which was fleeing from police on the highway.

“Reports from the scene indicate that three women are in a critical condition,” said Athlenda Mathe, media liaison officer for Netcare 911.

“The exact details to the cause of the accident will remain a subject for police investigation and comment.”

Four people were declared dead on scene by Netcare911 paramedics and other services.

“Reports from the scene indicate that the deceased on scene are all women.

“We can confirm that all the passengers in the taxi were all women except the driver of the taxi,” said Mathe.

“All injured patients were stabilised on scene and transported to various hospitals in the area for further medical care.”

The Netcare2 helicopter was dispatched to the scene to airlift a critically injured woman to a level one trauma  facility in Johannesburg for further medical care.

The highway has been closed.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

Authorities are on scene.
