Winter Solstice Swim a success

Germiston Lake hosted the Winter Solstice Swim challenge on June 21.

Members of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 27 braved the cold and participated in the Winter Solstice Swim challenge.

The brief, icy dip took place at Germiston Lake, on June 21.

“Today is the shortest day and the longest night of the year and, to celebrate, people in different parts of the world mark this day by taking part in this challenge,” said NSRI Station 27’s training officer, Gerhard Potgieter.

“We had 11 of our members taking part in the swim.”

Potgieter also said that the challenge is a brief 50m swim.

“It is a short swim and it was really great, except that I can’t feel my toes,” joked Potgieter.

“It is a great team-building event.”
