Steamy competition

Young chefs were put to test at the Gauteng finals of the Hirsch’s and Defy Junior Super Chef Competition.

Hirsch’s recently hosted the Gauteng finals of the Hirsch’s and Defy Junior Super Chef Competition.

The competition, which is aimed at budding chefs between the ages of eight and 13, was held at Hirsch’s Fourways on June 17.

“Also sharing the sponsorship were Zwilling, Snappy Chef and Green Pan,” said Hirsch’s Meadowdale’s public relations officer, Letitia Haywood.

The contestants were the finalists from the six Hirsch’s stores in Gauteng, namely Boksburg, Centurion, Fourways, Meadowdale, Silverlakes and Strubens Valley.

“With prizes to the value of R40 000 up for grabs, the children pulled out all the stops to produce a dish which was both creative and tasty from the mystery box of ingredients provided,” explained Haywood.

“Guest judges MasterChef Deena Naidoo, Allan Hirsch and Sylvester Nair were on hand to assist and guide the children. They also commented that they thought that the culinary skills and creativity that the little chefs showed was unbelievable.

“They looked for planning, execution, presentation, taste and initiative when scoring the contestants.”

After much deliberation the judges reached consensus and the winners of the competition were announced:

  • First place went to 12-year-old Michelle Jones, from Centurion.
  • In second place was Sasha-Lee Peter (11), from Fourways.
  • Rounding off podium positions in third place was Maxine Nicholls (8), from Strubens Valley.
