Be on high alert on this road

A local family had a nasty experience on Main Reef Road, last Saturday.

Driving home from a birthday party, last Saturday night, turned into a scary experience for a local family.

Samantha Julius, her five-year-old son Lejean, her mom Shariffa (all from Primrose) and Samantha’s boyfriend Kyle Jagwa (from Edenvale) were driving along Main Reef Road, in Malvern East, on their way home after dropping off a family member in Rosherville.

“As we were driving we noticed concrete blocks in the road, but there was a gap to get through, so we went through the gap,” said Samantha.

“However, a bit further down the road we found another set of concrete blocks and a tree stump blocking off the rest of the road.

“We made a U-turn and saw a man pushing a bed base to close the road from the direction we had come in, to prevent us from exiting the area.”

Shariffa looked to the side and noticed two other men appearing from the shadows, waiting for the family’s vehicle to stop.

“Kyle, who was driving, drove through the bed base and kept driving even though a piece of the base got caught in one of the tyres,” Samantha said.

“Finally it came loose and we managed to get to the Cleveland Police Station.”

The police said they would dispatch a vehicle to visit the scene of the incident.

Kyle sorted out the car by removing the bottom engine cover and the family was able to drive home.

Samantha added that the road is dangerous, as it is littered with potholes, has no street lights and the grass in the open field they were passing is very long and you can’t see people approaching your vehicle.

“If I remember correctly, one of the guys was wearing either jeans or tracksuit pants, a white jacket or jersey with a green stripe across the chest, white All Stars and a beanie,” said Samantha.

“It all happened so fast.”

She wants other commuters who use the road to be vigilant, as she is sure the men planned to rob or hijack them.

“There is an old house in the open field nearby and they might have come from there,” she said.

“People must be alert when travelling on this road.”
