Simmer trounce the Harlequins

The Germiston Simmer Rugby Club continued their Senior Grand Challenge Rugby League campaign with a win against the Krugersdorp Harlequins.

The Germiston Simmer Rugby Club trumped the visiting Krugersdorp Harlequins during their Senior Grand Challenge Rugby League match on Friday.

The match was played at the Germiston Stadium, Simmer’s home grounds and ended with a score of 27-7.

The first team from Simmer played a constructive game in the first half, dominating play and scoring three tries in the first half.

The team headed into half-time with 24 points on the score board to the Harlequins 0.

However, the Harlequins’ “never say die” attitude served them well in the second half as they dominated play and only allowed Simmer to add three points to their first half score.

The Harlequins’ first team dominated the scrums in the second half with four tightheads stolen.

The home side were left with no choice but to defend their score and stuck to their defensive structures which allowed only one try from the Harlequins.

“Simmer has one of the most talented teams in years , but they need to gel as a team not 15 brilliant individuals doing their own thing

“Rugby is a disciplined team effort,” said coach Maree Bester.

The games tries were scored by André van Heerden, Barry Niemand and Christopher Khumalo.

Simmer’s second team’s game resulted in a “to and fro” affair with Jan Potgieter scoring twice and captain Charles Moorcroft scoring once.

Simmer put down the first points with a try in the first five minutes, however, the Harlequins side equalised shortly after.

The match ended in a 21-26 victory for the visiting side.

The u-20 side won their match against Krugersdorp 38-26.
