Action-packed Germiston Derby

The Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) Super League heated up in Germiston on Saturday, with Luso Africa and Germiston City FC battling it out in the Germiston Derby.

The match was played on Germiston’s home grounds, the Germiston City Sports Club.

Luso won the gruelling match 3-2.

It was hard to pick a clean winner, with both teams being equally matched in skill, and sometimes in mistakes.

Germiston soaked up the early pressure from Luso, settling into their own game plan and, by the 10-minute mark, playing some good, attractive football.

But it was Luso who struck on a counter-attack in the 35th minute, scoring the match’s first goal.

Soon after the break, Germiston struck with an excellent run down the right by Lebogang Chokoe, who beat the Luso defender and struck a thundering shot, leaving the Luso keeper no chance and levelling the score.

Some sustained pressure from the Germiston side culminated in an unlucky hit-and-miss of Luso’s upright by Piso Muso.

Luso then scored their second goal of the match and, seconds later, Germiston’s Chokoe levelled the scores once again.

Germiston continued to apply the pressure to Luso, but their hopes of a third goal were dashed when a foul on Ttsitso Molmela saw them lose out on a perfect scoring opportunity.

In a moment of concentration loss, Comfort Molebela allowed the Luso striker to get the better of him and committed a foul inside the big box, opening the field for Luso to score a penalty, which gave them the match.

Luso’s goals were scored by Mario Ferreira, Roberto Da Silva and Igor Ivanov.

The reserve teams also met, with Luso winning the match 5-1, while Germiston’s third team drew their match against Benoni Northerns 4-4, in the league’s third division.
