Boxing academy offers safe haven

The Elsburg Boxing Academy is encouraging people of all ages interested in learning how to box to join the club.

Twenty years ago the Elsburg Boxing Academy made its home at the corner of Plein and Mare streets in Elsburg.

Now, thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team, the boxing club has returned to the same building.

“Danie Putter re-founded the club in August 2015,” explained William Fryer, chairman of the club.

“He became involved in the club because of his son.”

The club now practises Monday and Wednesday nights from 6pm to 8pm, and is encouraging all community members from six years old to join the club and learn to box.

“You can be 40 years old and still compete in tournaments but can train until you’re too old to stand, so there is no excuse not to join,” joked William.

The academy’s boxers also compete in Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg tournament, as well as Gauteng tournaments by invitation.

“We have been very busy lately.

“Our members have competed in three tournaments and have three tournaments coming up,” William said.

The club looks forward to hosting tournaments of its own.

“We want to make our club a beacon of hope for the community,” said William.

“The club gives a number of the young boxers somewhere to go and have fun twice a week to forget the troubles in their everyday lives,” said Amanda Fryer, secretary for the academy.

The Elsburg Boxing Academy is appealing to the community and business to help the club with sponsorships and/or donations.

“There is nothing too small; every bit helps,” said Amanda.
