Illegal miners nabbed, gold dust confiscated

Bag full of gold dust seized, two illegal miners arrested.

Two illegal miners were arrested on Sunday at 9.30am at the Knights DRD Ergo mines in Germiston.

EMPD Warrants Section officers acted on a tip-off about the illegal miners while they were involved in their specialised duty of checking drivers for outstanding warrants on traffic fines.

Caught red-handed dipping buckets and digging with spades at a nearby stream, the two Basotho nationals were found in possession of a bag full of gold dust.

They were arrested and charged at the Germiston Police Station with illegal mining.

They are both aged 32.

The men were expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on May 23.
