Three workers trapped under heavy concrete

A DEMS rescue team worked swiftly to save three men trapped under concrete slabs.

An Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue team worked diligently to rescue three contract workers who were trapped under heavy concrete slabs on Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened in Serenade Street, Elandsfontein and emergency services received the call at about 3.10pm.

The trapped workers sustained multiple compact fractures and were all in a critical condition.

Another two workers sustained minor injuries.

All five were demolishing the structure when the incident occurred.

Three of the men were under the concrete slab and the other two were on top when the structure collapsed.

“It took less than two hours to recover all three trapped workers from the rubble.

“Passionate and strong-minded rescue team members used various heavy duty rescue tools to recover them,” said William Ntladi, district manager media liaison for DEMS.

Pre-hospital medical treatment was given to all five of the workers before they were transported to Life Roseacres Hospital for further medical treatment.
