A wonderful World Red Cross Day

The Germiston Red Cross Society joined societies across the world in the celebration of World Red Cross Day.

Red Cross societies across the globe joined in the celebrations of World Red Cross Day on May 8.

The day marks the beginning of the Red Cross Society and honours Henry Dunant, who founded the organisation.

Dunant was born on May 8, 1828, in Geneva, Switzerland and died on October 10, 1910, and the Red Cross Society celebrates his birthday each year.

The Germiston branch of the Red Cross marked the day with a special celebration at their Driehoek offices on May 9.

National communications manager, Lungile Khambule shared a brief history on the branch which was started in 1947 and originally had both a children’s home and an old age home.

Due to financial constraints, the children’s home was closed down, but the old age home, Elandsvallei Home for the Aged, is still thriving.

The branch also assists in a number of areas including disaster relief, care of the elderly and frail, and training.

As is a yearly tradition at the Red Cross, manager Barbara Jensen presented a beautifully decorated birthday cake, which was enjoyed by guests and staff members.

Collen Huma, manager of the Brakpan Red Cross, closed the celebration. “The Red Cross is nothing without the hard work of its volunteers,” he said.

“As long as there is suffering in the world the Red Cross will be there to assist.”
