EMPD impounds 54, discontinues 68 vehicles

The EMPD’s Bumper to Bumper operation is continuing to crack down on transgressions in the Germiston area.

The EMPD’s Bumper to Bumper operation targeted motor vehicles in Germiston, Heriotdale and Delmore Gardens (in Boksburg), on Tuesday.

The operation took place between 6am and 2pm.

“Fifty-four motor vehicles found to be in a terrible state to be on public roads were impounded and 68 vehicles with less minor defects were discontinued and instructed to go for a re-test,” said spokesman for the EMPD Wilfred Kgasago.

“The roads that were focused upon were Voortrekker, Railway, Meyer, Lower Boksburg, Jupiter, Wits Rifles, Lower Germiston, Elsburg, Johan Rissik and Passchendaele.”

The 54 impounded vehicles had serious defects, including service and emergency brakes not working, smooth tyres, oil leaks, steering mechanisms with excessive play, exposed electrical wires, not licensed and registered, without number plates, cracked windscreens, doors not closing properly and excessive smoking.

The vehicles impounded and discontinued included one midi bus, 12 LDVs, 80 minibuses and 29 light motor vehicles.

Towed vehicles can be released on payment of a R1 860 towing fee and the daily storage fee is R241.

The vehicles can be reclaimed from the EMPD pound in Boksburg.
