Women and children’s safety put first

The Greater Germiston Society for Child and Family Welfare recently hosted a successful self-defence workshop for women and children.

It is of the utmost importance that people, especially women and children, know how to defend themselves.

To aid in this the Greater Germiston Society for Child and Family Welfare recently hosted a self-defence and awareness workshop.

The workshop was a great success and the team from Child Welfare thanked everyone who took the time to support the event, which was held at Edenvale Sports Centre.

“Thank you to those who participated in the workshop.

“You walked away from the day, not bruised, but empowered and energised,” said Barbara Bouwer, the director of Germiston Child Welfare.

The workshop’s participants received practical defence training and safety tips from Capt. Hennie Bouwer from the SAPS Provincial Office. They also heard inspirational talks from guest speakers Alta McMaster from the Epic Foundation and Willie Freysen, a family law attorney from Freysen Attorneys.

McMaster shared her life story of how she turned violence to victory by overcoming spousal abuse, rape and substance abuse, as well as how she recovered and restored her life by taking control, speaking out and finally establishing an NPO that supports survivors of rape.

She encouraged women to speak out about rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence or violations against them.

Freysen provided guests with valuable information about protection orders and what procedures must be followed to obtain a protection order against someone.

“Brilliant workshop, I would encourage more women to attend these workshops as they offer such valuable life lessons,” said attendee Euphrasia Francis.

“Thank you to the management and staff at Edenvale Action Soccer for availing the venue at no cost and assisting during the day,” said Bouwer.
