Another away win for Germiston

Germiston Football Club continued their prefect away match record winning streak with a 1-0 victory against Alberton FC.

Germiston City Football Club’s Eastern Local Football Association’s (ELFA) super league continued on Saturday, with an away match against Alberton Football Club.

The side added another win to their already prefect away match record when they defeated the host side 1-0.

After the defeat against Sporting FC, last Saturday, Germiston knew they would have to pull out all the stops in their clash with a strong Alberton FC, who had yet to be defeated this season.

Coach Sreton Pavlovich decided to shuffle the field, pushing Germiston’s captain, Godfrey Chando, into a midfield role.

The sides were evenly matched in the first 15 minutes of the first half, but it was Alberton FC who first tried for a goal, which saw young goalkeeper Benji Kuanda tipping a ferocious shot over the crossbar.

The match then turned into a scrappy affair, with both sides committing undue errors and much of the play remaining between the sides’ midfielders.

With only a few minutes remaining in the first half Germiston scored a goal when Chenadu Ekwemmuo latched onto a misguided header from the Alberton centre back, to slot the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the Alberton net.

The second half saw both teams pulling out all the stops.

Late into the second half Alberton made a last ditch attempt for an equaliser, by peppering the Germiston goal, but Kuanda kept the side at bay with some brave, and sometimes eccentric, goalkeeping, which kept the Germiston coach on the edge of his seat until the final whistle.

Germiston’s reserve side lost 3-0 to the Alberton reserve side after a tough match, while Germiston’s third side won an enthralling encounter 5-3 against Birch Acres Football Club, in their ELFA Division Three match.

Germiston will next play at home, against Swide United of Katlehong, this Saturday.
