Breaking: ANC Ekurhuleni volunteers killed, others injured in Free State bus crash

Eleven people have died and scores of others have been injured after a bus overturns.

It is reported that ANC Ekurhuleni volunteers travelling home after attending the ANC local government manifesto launch in Port Elizabeth have been involved in a fatal bus crash in the Free State.

According to various emergency services organisations the accident took place on the N1 highway, between Ventersburg and Winburg in the Free State on Sunday.

Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesman said that 11 people had been killed and scores more injured after the bus overturned.

“A further 59 patients were found on scene with various injuries, 21 of these patients were in a critical condition and required advanced life support interventions.

“ER24 paramedics, along with other services, responded to the scene after receiving reports that a bus full of people had rolled multiple times.

“On arrival, paramedics found a bus lying on its roof a short distance away from the main road.

“Scores of bodies littered the scene,” Meiring said..

“Paramedics from various services began to triage the patients, setting up a staging area for the treatment.

Paramedics treated patients on scene and transported them to various local hospitals for urgent treatment.

Local authorities are on scene for further investigations.

Athlenda Mathe, media liaison officer from Netcare 911 said Netcare 911 worked hand-in-hand at the scene with provincial emergency service paramedics and paramedics from other organisations.

“All the injured have been transported to hospital for treatment,” she said.
