Smash-and-grab hotspots

The Germiston SAPS are warning the community to be alert and to lock away their valuables when driving.

The Germiston police are warning the community to be alert and not to become the next victim of a smash-and-grab incident.

“Drivers of motor vehicles must adopt the practice of not leaving any valuable items inside their cars while driving.

“Everything should rather be put inside their boots,” said WO André de Jager, spokesman for the Germiston SAPS.

“Female drivers must ensure they put their handbags inside the boots of their cars so that they are not visible to the criminals that commit smash-and-grab crimes.

“The Germiston police have cases opened that could have been prevented if people would just place handbags, laptops, purses and tablets in the boots of their cars.”

Drivers must also be more alert when they approach red traffic lights of what action is going on in and around the traffic lights and while they are stationary at the traffic light they must look around them to try and prevent themselves becoming a victim of crime.

“The community is also urged to open cases if they are a victim of crime,” said de Jager.

The current smash-and-grab hotspot areas in Germiston according to the SAPS are:

  • Corner of Jack and Refinery roads (on- and off-ramps from the M2 highway).
  • Corner of Power Street and Refinery Road.
  • Corner of Meyer Street and Johann Rissik Road next to the BP garage.
  • N17 highway Wits Rifles on- and off-ramps to Black Reef Road.
  • Corner of Junction and Johann Rissik roads next to the informal settlement.
