The Elsburg police have said farewell to Col Veeshani Arikum, and welcomed Lieut-Col Phiwe Ndwandwe as their new station commander.
Ndwandwe takes the reins as station commander after 22 years in the SAPS.
He had always wanted to join the SAPS and in 1994, straight after school, he did just that.
From working as a constable at the Germiston Police Station he made his way through the ranks to become commander of the Germiston Crime Prevention Unit.
“I don’t like to be in the office, I prefer to be out on the street, as that is where the crime is,” Ndwandwe said.
Ndwandwe officially took office in mid-February and does not want to make the community of Elsburg any false promises, “All I can promise is that I will work hard,” he said.
“However, in order to do my job I need the community’s support, as I cannot fight crime alone.
“Report crimes, get involved in the community by joining the neighbourhood watch and getting to know their neighbours,” he encouraged.
Ndwandwe will be getting to know the community through several campaigns hosted in various suburbs throughout the Elsburg policing precinct.
“Once I have met the community and know what problems they are facing I will begin to work through everything,” he said.
