Local racer takes top spot

Local superbike racer is ready to burn up the track in the South African National Drag Racing Championship.

It is back to the track for local superbike racer Peter de la Rey.

The Malvern East resident has started the new season of the South African National Drag Racing Championship on his new motorcycle, a BMW S1000RR superbike.

He competed in the superbike category in the first round of the championship at Tarlton International Raceway, recently.

“I started the new season with my new motorcycle after the correct spares arrived from the USA just in time for the event and it was worth the wait because I felt comfortable and quick straight away,” De La Rey said.

“I was the quickest in practice and qualified second, 2/100ths of a second off pole and had a bit of extra speed in reserve so I felt very confident .

“Once the racing started I really got going and managed a comfortable win.”

De la Rey added that he is really looking forward to the next event which is a Super Fest event and, therefore a big one, in April.

“I have got several small things to do on the bike and hope to improve it even more,” he said.
