Dawnview High gives back to the community

Pupils from Dawnview High School work together to help non-profit organisations.

Dawnview High School has an initiative called the “Matsogo Fela Project”, which means “hands only” in Pedi and SeSotho.

This project enables pupils to go out and help with worthy causes at old age homes, orphanages and crèches.

Elandsvallei Old Age Home in Primrose was the first worthy cause that the project team members visited on Saturday.

The home is a South African Red Cross Society beneficiary and was in need of gardening services and general cleaning up.

The pupils were tasked with environmental cleaning, lawn mowing, dish washing, food preparation, storeroom cleaning and packing and floor mopping.

The approximately 40 pupils made light work of the tasks at hand.

The aim of the project is to teach pupils altruism – helping someone without expecting something in return.

It also aims to teach pupils respect and care for others.

This was the project’s first attempt at doing voluntary work at non-profit organisations, out of school hours and it was a resounding success.

Non-profit organisations that would like some manual work done at their premises can contact Dawnview High on 011 828-9014, fax to 011 828-2668 or e-mail to secretary@dawnviewhigh.co.za
