Residents desperate for answers from metro

Residents of Wesel Road desperately want the metro to prune the trees in their street.

Wesel Road, in Sunnyridge, has been plagued by electricity outages.

The residents believe that the poorly pruned trees in the street are to blame, as they interfere with the power cables.

Despite numerous calls to the call taking centre, residents have been unable to get through or to find out who is responsible for the pruning of the trees.

One resident explained that the trees are so overgrown she battles to open and close her gate.

The GCN contacted the metro in an attempt to get some answers for desperate Wesel Road residents.

Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro, responded with the following statement:

“The metro tries to maintain the trees in their original shape, while in other instances, such as where tree branches entangle with the electrical overhead cables, we also try to cut them shorter so that they are below the overhead cables, to prevent sparks,” he said.

“We are sometimes faced with the challenge of a vehicle mechanical breakdown, when we are forced to use a stepladder in order to render the service; this compromises the quality of workmanship.”

Residents can contact the parks department on 011 999-1668/71/72, or the municipal services call centre on 086 054 3000.

“The responsible department attends to tree complaints according to the calls logged on the complaints management system,” said Gadebe.

“There are also people who walk into the depot to lay a complaint, and sometimes we get complaints from the CPF.”
