Visually impaired golfer wants to smash record

Visually impaired golfer, Ernst Conradie will attempt to break a world record on March 5.

Primrose resident Ernst Conradie, a visually impaired golfer, will soon be attempting to break the world record for the most golf balls hit in 12 hours.

This event will help to raise money for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and for the SA Blind Golf Association.

“I want to donate the money to the SA Blind Golf Association and the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, because I am also a visually impaired golfer and they want to send a South African blind golf team to the World Blind Golf Championship,” said Conradie.

“I also believe that children must play and run around and it is heart sore for me to see children suffer like that.”

Conradie started playing golf when he was 35 and also played for the South Africa Blind Cricket Association from 1998 to 2004.

“I love sport and have been selected to represent South Africa at the World Blind Golf Championship in November, in Japan.

“This is a new goal that I want to achieve and I’ll do it for two worthy causes.

“I want to show people that people with disabilities can do whatever people without disabilities can do.

“One of the difficulties I will have to face will be not bruising the fingers of the people who will put down the balls,” he joked.

“The biggest difficulties I will have to contend with during the record attempt will be the blisters – but that will be a problem for my medical team – and also to go on for the 12 hours, but I think I will be mentally strong.”

The event will take the form of an open day at the Momentum Golf Village, and all the big golf suppliers in South Africa, like Taylor Made, Adams, Srixon, Cleveland, Wilson Staff, Nike and Mzumo, will be there.

People are welcome to come and test the latest equipment free of charge for the day and to help to sponsor some of the golf balls.

Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC) are the auditors for this event and entrance will be free.

The record attempt takes place on March 5, from 7am to 7pm, at Momentum Golf Village, 47 Boeing Road, Bedfordview.
