New modus operandi used by criminals to hijack vehicles

The Germiston SAPS are warning the community to be alert to a new modus operandi used by criminals.

The Germiston SAPS is warning the community to be aware of their surroundings at all times out on the roads.

They are also urged to be extra careful when pulling into their driveways and waiting for the gate to open, or for someone to come and open the gate manually.

There has been an increase in hijacking cases reported in the Germiston area.

“Another problem in the area at the moment is bogus cops, driving unmarked vehicles,” said WO André de Jager, spokesman for the Germiston SAPS.

“These ‘cops’ stop trucks and other vehicles and then hijacked and rob the victims of their personal belongings.”

The suspects are driving cars with single blue lights on the roof, or strobe lights on the dashboard near the windscreen.

“The community must be on the lookout for this modus operandi and, if you don’t feel safe at that precise moment, rather do not stop but drive to the nearest police station if possible,” advised de Jager.

“The police are committed to fighting this crime and to stop it from happening.

”With the help of the community reporting suspicious vehicles on the highways and in the residential areas we will succeed.”
