Police recover R1-million worth of tyres, arrest one

Thanks to the help of the community the Primrose police tracked down an alleged tyre thief and recovered the tyres.

The Primrose SAPS recently arrested a 33-year-old man for the theft of tyres worth R1-million.

The arrest took place in Wolf Street, Primrose.

This came after the complainant contacted the police and told them that she had received information that one of their company’s vehicles was busy offloading tyres in the Germiston area four days earlier.

“They tried to contact their driver and crew but were unsuccessful,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose SAPS.

“The complainant checked the company’s control room camera and established that the vehicle had not travelled on the roads it was supposed to.”

The police then received a tip-off and rushed to the address given, but only managed to recover the tyres there.

After following up a number of leads, the police tracked down and arrested the assistant driver of the truck in Wolf Street.

The driver is still at large but police are following up leads to track him down.

“We thank the members of the community who supply the police with information about criminal activities in our area.

“This is an indication that the community is tired of crime,” said Maome.

The suspect was detained at the Primrose Police Station and is due to appear in the Germiston Magistrates Court soon.
