New housing project for Germiston

The new housing projects at the Germiston Fire Station and in Delville Extension Nine were officially open by the mayor on Thursday.

An exciting new chapter has begun for Wards 35 and 36.

The metro, on Thursday, launched a ground-breaking housing project at the Germiston Fire Station.

Germiston is deemed to be the epicentre of the metro and the transformation thereof is top priority on the metro’s urban renewal plans.

The projects at the Germiston Fire Station and in Delville Extension Nine, are set to change the face of urban housing in the CBD, and were officially unveiled by the executive mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele.

 

“Our CBDs are degenerating, and are becoming inhabitable, therefore we have committed to the urban renewal project which comprises of upgrading infrastructure and building housing units,” he said during the ceremony.

The total cost of the two projects is estimated at R132-million and construction is set to take place over the next three years.

Both establishments will comprise of four storeys inclusive of the ground floor.

Alternative green building technologies have been incorporated in the design of these buildings with units ranging from one to two bedroom units or bachelor flats, all with their own living room, kitchen and bathroom.Facilities will also cater for people living with disabilities.

The units will aim to house people with an income of between R1 500 and R7 500 and will only be available for rental and not purchase.

The ward councillors of wards 35 and 36 Clr Mbuyiseli Xakambane and Clr Chris Swanepoel thanked all stakeholders and the community for their involvement the projects.
