Man arrested for Wychwood housebreaking

A community member manages to catch a would-be robber and hand him over to police.

While driving in Wychwood, a community member saw a man looking into a home.

He stopped and asked the 20-year-old man what he was doing.

The man replied that he was just passing through on his way to Bedfordview.

Suspicious, the community member circled the block and, on his return, allegedly discovered the man in the yard he had seen him looking into earlier.

The accused tried to escape, but the man was able to catch him.

Officers from the Primrose Police Station were called to the scene, where the man handed over the suspect to them.

Police searched the accused and found copper, taken from the house, in his possession.

“We thank the community member, who did not take the law into his own hands but rather handed over the accused to the police without any injuries.

“We hope other people will learn from him and work hand-in-hand with the police,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

The accused appeared in the Germiston Magistrates Court, where his case was postponed for plea and trial.
