Residents furious over reservoir leak

Metro says it will repair the leak at the Signal Hill reservoir.

Many Germiston residents have felt the effects of the ongoing drought which, being felt nationally, has brought water shortages, water restrictions and even outages.

As the metro continues to implement water restrictions in Germiston and urges residents to report leaks so they can be repaired, Primrose Hill residents want the leak at the Signal Hill reservoir repaired.

Adèle Schoombie, a long-time resident of Primrose Hill, commented on the leak: “I am fighting the same war all the time.

“The Signal Hill reservoir loses its water on a regular basis.

“Recently, not a litre or two, but copious quantities of water was wasted as it ran down the hill and over the streets of Primrose Hill.”

Schoombie explained that contacting the metro’s call taking centre doesn’t help, as they often do not answer the calls.

“If, on the odd occasion the call is answered, the non-committal attitude of the call centre operative is testimony to how much attention is paid to the complaint,” she said.

Residents of Primrose Hill want the metro to fix the problem permanently.

Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro, responded to the queries, stating: “The control float at the reservoir malfunctioned and the reservoir overflowed.

“The metro serviced the controls and it is now operational.”

Only a day after this response was received the GCN received a further complaint about water leaking from the reservoir.

The metro was contacted again.

“The complaints have been brought to our attention and we will be replacing the outlet non-return valves that are causing a push-back that has resulted in an overflow,” said Gadebe.

“The metro will soon be issuing a notice of a water interruption so that we can carry out the work.”
