Six arrested in shebeen raids

Primrose police shut down six illegal shebeens in a sigle weekend.

During a recent special operation in all of the informal settlements in Primrose, six illegal shebeens were closed.

The Primrose police arrested six shebeen owners, aged between 27 and 32, after they were unable to produce a licence to sell liquor.

A large volume of alcohol was also confiscated during the operation.

“Crimes like assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, domestic violence, murder and other violent crimes are still a major problem in the informal settlements.

“We believe that the abuse of alcohol plays a large role in these crimes,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.

“We will keep on conducting similar operations into the festive season.”

Some of the accused paid admission of guilt fines and were released, while others appeared in the Germiston Magistrates Court, where they were released on a warning.
