Hefty fines for not obeying water restrictions

Metro calls on residents to adhere to water restrictions.

In the light of the persisting heat wave sweeping through Gauteng and the delayed seasonal rains, which have caused acute water supply interruptions in parts of Ekurhuleni, the metro calls on all residents and businesses to strictly adhere to the restrictions put in place.

Failure to adhere to restrictions will result in penalties.

The following restrictions have been put in place:

  • No filling of swimming pools;
  • No irrigation of gardens with hosepipes and/or sprinklers at any times.

According to MMC for water and energy Clr Doctor Xhakaza, the above measures are classified as unauthorised until the restrictions are lifted.

Penalties for non-compliance will be levied as promulgated by the metro.

Should consumers be in contravention of these restrictions by watering their gardens or washing their vehicles with hosepipes, a fine of up to R6 196 will be issued to households, while business consumers will be fined R12 626, as well as related administration costs.

“In reducing your consumption, you will be contributing to our efforts to keep the amount of water in our reservoirs at acceptable levels, thus ensuring a consistent supply,” said Xhakaza.

In addition to the restrictions, residents are still encouraged to refrain from the following:

  • No washing of pavements and cars with hosepipes.
  • Reduce showering time.
  • Repair all water pipe leaks, including leaking toilet cisterns.
  • Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily.
  • Report burst pipes immediately to 0860 54 3000.
