Breaking News: COSAS students vandalise school and assault teacher

Germiston High School fell victim to an attack by COSAS members this afternoon.

Students and staff of Germiston High School were terrified when approximately 300 members of the Germiston branch of COSAS (Congress of South African Students) descended on the school, this afternoon (Friday).

One teacher was also slapped in the face with an open hand during the attack and windows, doors, classrooms and six vehicles were vandalised.

According to Capt George Raphulu, head of communications for the Germiston SAPS, the members were from different schools in Katlehong.

“The members came to deliver a memorandum to the school’s principal André Beukes demanding that children at Germiston High stop paying school fees.

“They forced the children to leave the school and demanded that they join them.

“The pupils refused and the COSAS members became violent.”

Three leaders of COSAS were arrested, aged between 16 and 17 years old.

The Lambton Klip Sector Four CPF and Armour Tactical assisted the Germiston SAPS and EMPD on the scene.

“We will be  monitoring the situation on Monday, in case they return,” said Raphulu.

The GCN has contacted Phumla Sekhonyane, the chief director at the Gauteng Eductaion Department for comment.

More information will follow as it becomes available.
