Metro ropes in the youth on Clean City Campaign

Metro set to look at the environment.

Have you ever considered that throwing a cigarette butt, a banana peel or an empty water bottle out of your car into a public space could cost you R2 000 or land you in jail?

Furthermore, have you considered that, in a year, it could cost your municipality millions of Rand to clear refuse and building rubble from a veld or street corner?

If not, the metro is asking you to start being considerate and to take responsibility for the cleanliness of your neighbourhood.

On October 24, Ekurhuleni’s executive mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele, will unveil the Clean City programme which is aimed at eliminating illegal dumping, littering and rodent infestation.

The eight-month long campaign, themed “A Cleaner and Greener Ekurhuleni Starts with You”, aims to achieve the following objectives:

  • Eliminate illegal dumping;
  • Reduce rodent infestation on premises to 30 per cent or less;
  • Rehabilitate and green, maintain, monitor and hand over to parks 50 per cent of the identified illegal dumping hot spots;
  • Conduct education and awareness activities in communities on environmental issues; and
  • Ensure by-law enforcement on matters regarding the environment.

On the day of the launch, which is taking place at Tsakane Stadium, at 9am, community members will be introduced to the metro’s new green brigade, consisting of 5 000 young recruits.

Over the duration of the programme they will spread across the metro to eradicate heaps of dirt lying around as a result of illegal dumping, sweep the streets, cut grass, plant trees and conduct educational talks in their communities.

They will also clean water bodies such as the lakes, dams and pans, beautify township entrances, as well as educate citizens on municipal by-laws which focus on environmental issues.
