Special golf day will assist the aged

Local restaurant set to help the elderly.

With the weather warm and the festive season approaching, what better way to show you care than by spending a day outdoors teeing off for charity.

Seven Turn and Tender branches are uniting to hold a Charity Golf Day on November 9, at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.

The event will see seven charities benefiting from a month of fund-raising in-store, as well as the golf day itself.

The Turn and Tender branches involved are Bryanston, Boksburg, Bedfordview, Bassonia, Daynfern, Illovo and Parktown North.

What makes the event, which kicks off in October (the Month of the Elderly), so special for Germiston is that Dimitri Papadakis, the owner of the Bedfordview and Bassonia branches has chosen Elandsvallei Home for the Aged as the Bedfordview restaurant’s beneficiary.

His Bassonia branch’s beneficiary is St Mary’s Children’s Home.

Papadakis told the GCN that the project has two aims, firstly to raise money for the charity and secondly to create awareness of the charity.

“We want to share the organisation’s stories with the customers in our restaurant and create awareness that way,” he said.

To this end each restaurant will be holding a raffle leading up to the golf day.

The raffle hamper in each store, valued at about R10 000, is a starting point for the fund-raising, as well as to get people talking and learning about the charity.

“This allows people to start understanding the charity and, hopefully, inspires them to get involved and help,” Papadakis said.

After the golf day each restaurant will host their chosen charity at a special function, where the funds raised will be handed over.

“We, as Turn and Tender, are pleased to be involved in charitable projects and want the money raised to go to charity in a useful way,” Papadakis said.

“I chose Elandsvallei Home for the Aged as I wanted to do something for the elderly.

“Their stories are so often forgotten and it is as important to take care of people in their twilight years as it is in their formative years.”

There are 60 fourballs available for the golf day at R4 000 per fourball.

Sponsors of holes and prizes will also be most welcome.

So far golfers can look forward to winning some awesome prizes, including, a 40-inch flat screen TV; a private wine blending and tasting evening with Jenny Ratcliff; a two-night stay at the LaVinier Wine Estate Lodge; a weekend away with golf at the Ernie Els Wine Estate and a two-night stay at the Thorny Bush Resort.

For more information, to book a fourball or to sponsor a hole or prizes contact Glen Dembo on 011 455-1000.

Help to make the day a huge success and put smiles on the faces of the charity organisations.
