Last river race before paddlers tackle Fish marathon

Paddlers prepare for the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon.

East Rand Kayak Club, based in Benoni, hosted a river race from the Vaal River Dam wall to Three Rivers on September 19.

The river race was the last in Gauteng and enabled paddlers to prepare for the upcoming A Grade Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon.

The marathon, an 80km challenge, is scheduled to take place in Cradock, in the Eastern Cape, in October.

The river races also provide opportunities for paddlers to gain qualifying points for an A Grade status which enables them to participate in A Grade events.

Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC)’s Buti Lamola, who partnered with Kanyisa Mancoba, have earned their grading and proved their skills and ability with a number of good podium finishes, including a win in the junior category.

They finished in a time of three hours and 21 minutes.

Lamola and Mancoba are part of VLC’s development programme and are students at Germiston High School.

The 33km river race involved a number of highly challenging river rapids and 26km of hard flat water resistant against the head winds.
