Watch: ‘Vulture restaurant’ serves up a feeding frenzy
Vultures lurking in the treetops patiently wait for a delivery vehicle to drive off before descending on a carcass pile.
The ‘Vulture restaurant’ at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre is usually fully booked when ‘birds of a feather flock together’ for a feeding frenzy.
In a video posted to the centre’s Facebook page, vultures can be seen in the treetops waiting for a delivery bakkie to drive off after delivering their meaty munchies.
The scavengers then descend on the carcass pile – in an orderly manner – to the delight of the centre’s guests.
National Geographic explains that most vultures feed primarily on carrion. “Their cleaning service is invaluable to humans. By hoovering up the remains of decaying bodies, they prevent stench, significantly curtail carbon emissions, and eliminate bacteria such as botulism and plague that can be released during decomposition,” a post on its website reads.
