Local author releases a book to help young people understand the realities of life after matric

DIEPSLOOT– Local author said her life experience after matric motivated her to write her book to help her peers understand that things will not always go the way they desired.

A 20-year-old Diepsloot-based author and social activist, Betty Ledwaba, has released her first fiction book aimed at teaching youngsters about the realities of life after matric.

Ledwaba said many youngsters in townships and rural areas usually get trapped by misconceptions that life will be smooth sailing after matric.

She said her life experience after matric motivated her to write her book to help her peers understand that things will not always go the way they desired.

“As a child, I developed a love for reading and started writing in 2014 when I was in Grade 7. I enjoyed reading books at school.”

Ledwaba said when she finished matric in 2020 she wanted to go study directing and scriptwriting, but due to financial difficulties at home, her dream was not realised.

“My life after matric was not the way I expected it to be. My experiences motivated me to write a book to educate other youngsters about the realities of post-matric life.”

She said her book titled Never Say Never tells the life of a teenage girl who had just finished her matric but never got the results she wanted.

“The character in my book is a young girl who got rejected at certain universities. She became desperate and ended up trading her body for money and starts taking drugs.”

She added the character in the book ended up contracting HIV and became very sick.

Ledwaba said she was planning to write Never Say Never Part two in the near future.
