Sunninghill community treated to Christmas carols

SUNNINGHILL – Many families joined the worship team of Hope Ridge Church to bring in the festive season.

The Sunninghill community was treated to Christmas carols performed by the worship team of a local church on November 28 at Sunninghill Garden Park.

Families came in their numbers to enjoy the warm sun with a picnic basket and blanket in hand. Hope Ridge Church had a number of activities planned for the evening, including a visit from Father Christmas with some presents, and a musical style retelling of the birth of Jesus Christ.

The church’s worship team sang popular carols including Little Drummer Boy and O Holy Night. While all children present received gifts, a number of prizes and vouchers were won by attendees in a raffle draw.
Elder at the church Ann-Magret McKerrell said the turnout from the community was impeccable as many had donated items to be won at the raffle draw.

“We’ve had this before and this is our second time having the carols in Sunninghill. We need to be together as a community. Seeing people come together like tonight was awesome,” she said.
“We had no idea who would come tonight, even with the advertising on social media. I think we had around 500 families tonight. We had prepared 300 bags, more people came and we handed out more, so it may have been close to 500 families.”

McKerrell said she got in touch with Linda Gildenhuys, chairperson of the Sunninghill Ratepayers Association to organise the carols in the area.

She added that the community showed immense support, whether it be from donations for hampers or for refreshments. “People were amazing tonight. Our amplifier blew when we were practising. Everyone was feeling great, and then that happened. No one complained or criticised, and it was just an awesome night.”
McKerrell concluded the church plans to do a lot more work and assistance in the community in the next couple of months, be it in Diepsloot or Alex.
