Dance school steps up

DAINFERN – Opening their doors seven years ago, HHMZ Dance School is optimistic about the future of their school after brilliant performances at the South African Dance Schools Competition.

A Dainfern dance studio had an impressive showing in the South African Dance Schools Competition last month.

Based at Junction Centre in Dainfern, HHMZ Dance School was formed in 2013 with Henry Nene at the helm, who decided to follow his passion of teaching dance after being a barista.

He said it was important to open a dance studio. “I have always loved sharing what I enjoy doing with others that’s how you learn and grow as a person because I learn from my students as well.

“It is also to give kids a purpose in life so that they do not end up being involved in bad things like drugs and teenage pregnancy, and that is why I decided to start teaching and share with others and that was the best decision I made.”

Nene works with his dance partner Lerato Hure. The dance school’s results in the competition saw all the dancers get placed, with the junior team taking gold and the senior team obtaining a diamond as well as a special award.

With Covid-19 closing many businesses, HHMZ had to take their classes online. Nene said he is hopeful the school gets back on its feet after losing a few clients but is also optimistic about opening a few branches in the country.

“Our future goal is to grow the studio and have more branches within the country and outside the country, grow our dance culture in South Africa and get it to be taken seriously,” he said.

“We would like to employ more of our students and get them to teach under HHMZ and also to grow our clothing brand.”

Nene said the dance school will be hosting their end-of-year showcase on November 27 at Junction Centre.
