87 Diepsloot protesters to appear at Randburg Magistrates Court

KENSINGTON B – The charges the accused will face have not been confirmed yet, but it is expected there will be charges of common assault, malicious damage to property, and business robbery.

A total 87 accused will make their first appearance at Randburg Magistrates Court later today (July 14) in connection with looting and violence in Diepsloot recently.

This in connection with the #shutdownSA or pro-Zuma protests taking place in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

The State’s senior prosecutor, Yusuf Baba will lead the prosecution, but he could not yet confirm the charges the accused will face, as he had not yet seen the docket.

It is however expected that there will be charges of common assault, malicious damage to property, and business robbery.

During a first appearance at court, the accused will have their charges and rights read to them.

A police contingent is working together with patrollers from the Diepsloot Residents Association and local taxi associations to stop people from looting.

Spokesperson for the Diepsloot Residents Association Joseph Mvelase said they would not allow anarchy in Diepsloot and they would work together with law enforcement to ensure that perpetrators are arrested.
