Male skincare: a minimalist approach

Craft a minimalist skincare regime that gives optimum results.

Many of us are still living, working and exercising in one space and it’s awakened a new desire for decluttered spaces and a sense of minimalism in all aspects of our lives. We’re spring cleaning our homes, wardrobes, desk spaces and looking for opportunities to simplify our lives.

This desire for a less-is-more approach has extended into skincare and grooming regimes but doesn’t mean washing your face with whatever soap you have lying around and hoping for the best.

“It takes commitment, consistency and care to find the right products for your skin,” says Themba Ndlovu from Clere For Men.,

Recent research from Karlstad University in Sweden found that men between the ages 15 to 45 are taking more control of their appearance and embracing ideas of self-care and minimalist skincare routines. However, some men still won’t adopt a daily face care routine because they think it will get too expensive. Shop locally and affordably now and you’ll prevent skin and ageing issues later on.

Your skincare routine

  • Wash your face twice a day to remove dirt and oil; you’ll feel great starting and ending each day with a clean slate.
  • Moisturise your skin every morning to hydrate and rejuvenate your skin; moisture loss is one of the most common signs of ageing as your skin loses its ability to retain water giving it a wrinkled, worn-out appearance. Use a lightweight lotion with an SPF. Moisturise to hydrate and restore your skin in the evening after a shower.
  • Exfoliate your face once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells; there’s no harm in having a deep cleanse once a month too.
  • If you’re on the downward slope to your forties, it’s time to invest in an eye cream and a serum.
  • Keep your body moisturised especially in the dry seasons of the year.
  • Keep hydrated – this is the most important part of your daily regime.
  • Stop smoking, cut down on alcohol and sugar, keep fit and get enough sleep.

If you’re getting married…

  • It’s time to up your grooming (pun intended) game, but a few pointers:
  • Don’t arrive home from your bachelor party with black eyes or shaved eyebrows that can’t be rescued in time.
  • Don’t leave your grooming until the day before: have your hair cut ten days before.
  • If you’re planning to have your teeth whitened, for example, it’s a good idea to discuss this with your partner first.
  • If you have a beard, keep it groomed and in good condition.
