Swimming clubs and coaches to have access to public swimming pools

JOBURG – The City is looking to keep the 698 000 bathers that use public pools safe as they reopen pools.

The City of Johannesburg will reopen 10 public swimming pools to coaches and clubs.

As the number of Covid-19 cases drop, the City of Johannesburg will phase in the re-opening of public swimming pools across the city.

According to a statement by the City, the pools will reopen from 1 October for coaches and clubs only. These pools include Linden, Florida North, Pimville, Dobsonville, Pioneer Park, Ellis Park, Lenasia Ext 2, Lenasia Ext 5, Zoo Lake and Coronationville swimming pools.

MMC for Community Development Margaret Arnolds said they have and will continue to adhere to the necessary Covid-19 protocols and procedures to safeguard those who will be accessing the pools.

She said, “Bathers are expected to comply with changes, pay particular attention to signage at swimming pools and all times keep facilities clean.” After extensive engagements with stakeholders within the City’s Community Development Department, the City took the decision to still put all recreational swimming on hold until the coronavirus was under more control.

Arnolds did commit to reopening the pools to the public once the necessary safety precautions are in place.

“During the six months swimming season, the City of Joburg pools normally attract at least 698 000 bathers. Human beings are social and personal experience can never be replaced. Missing the splashing in the waters and basking at the public pools especially this time of the year is noted.”

The City has encouraged club members looking to take advantage of the reopening of pools to purchase club season tickets. They also asked the public to continue adhering to all rules and regulations put in place to help avoid the spread of Covid-19.

Arnolds concluded, “We continue to appeal to everyone to wear masks, practise physical distancing in public spaces and observe the hygiene golden rules of washing hands or using sanitisers to protect ourselves and those around us.”
