Dainfern star is ready for the Big Apple

DAINFERN – Dainfern actor and model Khwezi Mbekeni will soon be having a big adventure in the big apple after being selected to attend the International Modelling Talent Association in New York this June.

Dainfern actor and model Khwezi Mbekeni has big hopes for his upcoming visit to the Big Apple.

Mbekeni showcased his talent in both modelling and acting at the Its Arts Africa Showcase early last year. He had a call-back held at Silvestar Casino in September where he performed in front of global industry leaders such as Blaze Johnson of the The Voice America and talent scout Rhyvann Drummer. Now, the 22-year-old has been invited to the International Modelling Talent Association’s convention to be held in New York in June.

At the showcase, Mbekeni will be performing in front of an audience of about 300 talent scouts, agents and others in the industry, and if they like what he’s got he could get himself an international agent or opportunities to study further in the arts.

“I became interested in acting as a little boy when I watched the animated version of The Lion King,” Mbekeni told Fourways Review. “I would re-enact the scenes by myself over and over, even before I knew what acting was – I just saw people on TV and wanted to do what they did.”

As the time to leave for New York approaches, Mbekeni is looking forward to the opportunity to learn and grow his craft. The convention will last for just over a week and attendees will have the chance to participate in numerous workshops and seminars, in-between performing on stage in a range of disciplines including modelling, acting and dancing.

When he returns home, he wants to share his new knowledge with other South African youngsters who dream of a career in the arts.

“The biggest thing is that I’ll be coming back with knowledge, not only knowledge that I can use, but also knowledge that I’ll be able to share with other youths who want to become artists. I want to focus on community upliftment by working in underprivileged areas like informal settlements and equip and educate children to dream bigger.

“I want to breathe hope into these children that what they see as impossible is not actually impossible. If you can dream it, the facts don’t matter – big dreams or little dreams, with education and passion you can achieve anything.”

Besides modelling and acting, Mbekeni has a degree in directing, scriptwriting, cinematography and live performance. He also enjoys drawing.
