BMW Motorrad introduce three new models
The last 35 years saw the BMW Motorrad R, RT and RS models fitted with the notorious flat-twin boxer engine, and BMW will continue to do so.
BMW Motorrad has been using four-valve technology, combined with electronic fuel injection and closed-loop catalytic converter technology for more than 25 years to achieve the best possible power and torque delivery, efficiency and environmental compatibility. Now though, BMW has managed to further improve the boxer engine in terms of power and torque delivery, running refinement and improved emission and fuel consumption levels. The new engine which features BMW ShiftCam Technology will now feature in the new R 1250 RT, R 1250 R and R 1250 RS models, previously only seen in the R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure models.
The BMW ShiftCam Technology will enable the new models to have a variation of valve timings and valve strokes on the intake side. Also, the technology results in enhanced swirl of the fresh incoming mixture utilizing intake camshafts which are designed for asynchronous opening of the two intake valves which ultimately makes for more effective combustion. The engine also now features a toothed chain (previously a roller chain) camshaft drive, optimised oil supply, twin-jet injection valves and a new exhaust system.
The R 1250 RT, R 1250 R and R 1250 RS models will also come with two riding modes as standard which adapts the motorcycle to individual rider preferences. As standard, the motorcycle will have the Automatic Stability Control (ASC) fully enabled to ensure a high level of riding safety due to the best possible traction. Also as standard on the new models is the Hill Start Control, enabling convenient set-off on slopes.
Optional on the new models is Riding Modes Pro which includes Dynamic and Dynamic Pro (configurable) rider modes. Also optional is Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) which provides for even more efficient and safe acceleration, especially when banking and ABS Pro which enables greater safety when braking, even in a banking position. The new DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) provides additional safety when braking in difficult situations, by avoiding unintentional accelerator activation. This feature also reduces drive torque during braking to make full use of the braking power at the rear wheel. This keeps the motorcycle stable and shortens the braking distance.
The handling dynamics come from the optional Dynamic ESA “Next Generation”, which sees damping automatically adapts to the situation according to riding state and manoeuvres automatically compensate for all load states. An LED headlamp comes fitted as standard for the R 1250 RS a LED daytime riding light is optional and available for the R 1250 RS, R 1250 RT and the R 1250 R, the latter two coming standard halogen headlamps. All the models now feature Connectivity as standard R 1250 RS and R 1250 R models fitted with a 6.5-inch full-colour TFT screen and the R 1250 RT with a 5.7-inch TFT colour screen. The R 1250 RT’s TFT colour screen is supplemented with an analogue speedometer and rev counter.
Offering a range of customisation features which can enhance both performance and value is BMW Motorrad Spezial. This will allow for access to a variety of the very highest-quality materials, elaborate workmanship and attention to detail which for the R 1250 RT includes Option 719 wheels, Classic or Sport, an exclusive seat and one of two Spezial paint finishes while the R 1250 R and R 1250 RS can be equipped with the Option 719 Classic or Sport Wheels, the exclusive paintwork and the Option 719 seat. An HP sports silencer is available for the three new boxer models.
The new engine featured in all three models comes in the shape of a 1.2-litre boxer engine and can produce 100 kW while developing 143 N.m of torque.
