Written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, Diecisiete (Seventeen) is a heartfelt and inspiring film that follows a 17-year-old who escapes from a juvenile detention centre on a journey to find his therapy dog. The film sees the teen reconnect with his brother and grandmother through Cantabria as the journey unfolds in a motor home. The Spanish drama/comedy stars fresh faces Itsaso Arana, Kandido Uranga and Biel Montoro. Showing on Netflix from 18 October.

A post-apocalyptic film starring Elizabeth Moss, Anna Pniowsky, Tom Bower and Casey Affleck, Light of my Life sees a father go to extreme lengths to protect his daughter from looming danger a decade after a pandemic wipes out most of the female population on earth. As the father struggles to protect his daughter’s innocence, shielding her from newfound dangers, their bond and the character of humanity is tested. In cinemas from 18 October.

After tragedy hits, Rachel a teenage girl, finds herself caring for her little brother five years after her mother’s death. The story of Racheltjie de Beer is set in the 1800s in the South African wilderness. Their father sets out on a journey to start a new life and while en route, little Jamie goes missing in a snow blizzard. Young Rachel braves the storm to find him. The film stars Marius Weyers, Sandra Prinsloo, Antoinette Louw. In cinemas from 18 October.

The complicated relationship between the soon to be queen, Aurora and the horned fairy Maleficent is questioned in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil as they are torn in different directions. With new alliances and more challenges at play their overall aim is to use these ties to protect the moors and other magical creatures who reside there. The film stars Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sam Riley, Ed Skrein, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, Lesley Manville, Michelle Pfeiffer. In cinemas from 18 October.
