Heritage Day was declared a national holiday during the late Nelson Mandela’s presidential term to ensure that nation building happened not only in government but between neighbours, family and friends. Food is also a big part of many of our cultures.

So to celebrate our rainbow nation and a good old braai, here are some places you should check out on 24 September:

Natural Hair Expo

Celebrate your natural hair by heading to the Johannesburg Natural Hair Expo at Constitutional Hill from 8am.

Cost: Free for kids under 12. General entry cost R120 (Free ConHill tour + entry), Earlybird ticketscost R150 (Goodie bag + Free ConHill Tour + entry).

 

FNB Joburg 10K City Run

Break a sweat at Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown Precinct from 8am.

Cost: R170 for standard entry. R850 for the gold package (Race entry, timing chip, shuttle service to start & exclusive access to VIP area with refreshments and massage)

 

Magaliesburg Express

To celebrate South Africa’s history, why not do so by kicking it ‘old school’? Check out the Magaliesburg Express from 9am to 6pm at the Joburg Park Station.

National Heritage and Braai Day at Rietvlei Zoo Farm

Pack some good food, drinks and charcoal, and head over to Rietvlei Zoo Farm in your best South African outfit. Families can enjoy a bird aviary, farmyard, jungle-gyms and rides for kids.

You can hire a lapa or bring a gazebo with camping chairs.

Nature Lovers Walk

Later in the afternoon, when the day begins to cool, you can check out the Nature Lovers Walk at the Bryanston Country Club from 3pm.
