Help fund dance initiative in Diepsloot

MIDRAND – Saving a community one dance at a time. Read more here...

Power of Dance, a Midrand-based dance company, creates platforms and provides opportunities for talented young dancers from communities such as Diepsloot, Kya Sand and Eldorado Park and encourages them to develop their natural talents through hard work, passion and dedication.

The Power in Dance team members and dance coach Corlanie Botha, who has worked with local and international choreographers, said the dance company was created in the spirit of giving back and does so frequently in local underprivileged communities.

Botha said,”We believe that, given the right help, children will have a greater chance of overcoming the tough circumstances which they have been faced with in their young lives. This year we focused on reaching as many of the community youth and encouraging them to choose alternatives to drugs and gangsterism through workshops, weekly classes and the structure of the power in dance programme.”

She took some of the children to competitions, assisted them through their dance exams and trained them to become dance coaches. Botha was also nominated as one of the Lead SA’s hero of the month and she says she always believed she would be someone who would change lives through dancing.

In a sad turn of events one of Botha’s dance students who had become a positive influence in his community was allegedly shot by gangs in Diepsloot. “This motivated me to launch the Fight Knife Programme in Diepsloot which was launched on 14 October. We engaged the community in self-defense lessons and First Aid First Responder training.”
