Guests gather at Montecasino for the premiere of MTV Shuga: Down South

Guests gathered at the global premiere of the hard-hitting drama, MTV Shuga: Down South at Montecasino recently.

Hosted by MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation and MTV Base, the youth drama puts the spotlight on the ups and downs of love, sex, relationships, pregnancy and difficult choices among vulnerable teens.

The new 12-part series features characters such as an irresponsible teen mother, a predatory teacher, an ambitious hostess, a conflicted adolescent struggling to understand his identity, a neglected trophy wife, a pregnant schoolgirl, a possessive boyfriend and a ruthless entrepreneur.

The setting of the drama series takes place in the real-life homes, cafes, schools, parks and hangouts of Zenzele, a township in Johannesburg.

Directed by Mmabatho Montsho, Thabang Moleya and Rea Rangaka, the drama series also includes a new focus on issues affecting adolescent girls in the country, with emphasis on their vulnerability to unintended pregnancy and HIV infection.

Executive vice president and managing director of Viacom International Media Networks Africa, Alex Okosi said, “Pro-social programming that empowers our audience is an important part of our MTV Base brand. MTV Shuga: Down South deals with real issues facing young people through authentic story lines and characters and we are excited to premiere this latest series based in South Africa.”

The drama premiered on 8 March on MTV Base, channel 322 at 9.30pm.
