New series to aid entrepreneurs

FOURWAYS – Want to find out how industry leaders are doing their bit to help invest in up-and- coming entrepreneurs.

Established in 2014, Chivas Regal South Africa, a renowned luxury whiskey, launched The Venture, a global competition to find and support promising entrepreneurs from around the country.

Titled Win the Right Way, the competition provides the winners with invaluable contacts and mentorship from world-famous businessmen and women and a share of $1 million (R13 630 800) in financial investment. “Over the last two years, we have shown our belief in and commitment to this philosophy by awarding $2 million (R27 261 600) to start-ups globally that ‘do well by doing good’, because we believe purpose and profit can coexist,” Shelley Reeves, marketing manager of Scotch Whiskies at Chivas Regal said.

Currently in its third year, Chivas Regal South Africa devised a new, unique and exciting platform to share The Venture which is a 10-part televised Elevator Pitch series for entrepreneurs. The series hosted by Top Billing presenter, Lorna Maseko, airs on Mzansi Magic, DSTV channel 161 at 7.28pm on Mondays to Fridays until 20 January. For the first time in global history, the show has some of the entrepreneurs, who entered their ideas in the South African leg of The Venture, being selected to appear in Elevator Pitch episodes of just 120 seconds.

Each episode gives an introduction to the contestant and shows them pitching their business ideas that ‘do good’ to a captain of industry in only 35 seconds, affording them the opportunity to get into the Top Five final where only one person will win R350 000 and the chance to represent South Africa in the United States.

The social entrepreneurs will present their business plans to a panel of judges and celebrities, including former chief executive officer of multi-billion rand diversified African investment holding company, Shanduka; and current executive chairperson of Sigma Capital, Phuti Mahanyele; IT influencer and best known as the founder of Fintech company Thumbzup Innovation, Stafford Masie; and renowned entrepreneur and content architect, Kojo Baffoe.

The prominent experts will decide South Africa’s The Venture 2017 winner, investing R350 000 in their idea and allowing him or her to represent the nation at The Venture Year Three final in America. The winner will be announced on Mzansi Magic.
