Fantasy of Light on show

MIDRAND – Mall of Africa is hosting a new theatre show...

Midrand’s Mall of Africa hosted Fantasy of Light as part of its festive season celebration.

The theatre show was a performance of the well-known old fairytale story of Sleeping Beauty with a twist, plus numerous additions to make it relevant to the modern generation of children.

Lizz Meiring, writer and director of Fantasy of Light said, “[Here] people rediscover their magic, both children and adults. We reach people who don’t go to the theatre by bringing the theatre to them.”

Meiring has been in the industry for 32 years and has worked on many productions.

She said if there was a huge interest in the show, she hoped to make it an annual event.

The cast was selected through auditions and Meiring said she looked for what she called ‘triple threats’ meaning individuals that were able to act, sing and dance.

The cast is made up of 18 people who only had four weeks to rehearse on the nine-foot stage which was assembled at the mall.

The show is designed to run at night because of the thousands of lights which are used as decor.
