What to do during a mall robbery

BRYANSTON – ADT Security gives some advice on what to do during a mall robbery.

Theunis Kotze, general manager of ADT Inland Region weighed in on the issue of robberies and the recent bomb scare at Nicolway Centre as reported in Sandton Chronicle, and highlighted the importance of knowing what to do to stay safe in these situations.

Kotze advised that if you are ever caught in the middle of a heist, it is essential to stay calm. He also highlighted that it is important to always be on the lookout for any suspicious activities and to be aware of the people around you.

“If you are in a store that is being robbed, it is important to cooperate, listen and follow their instructions closely. Try and keep as calm as possible. Everyone reacts in a different way, but try and breathe deeply until help arrives,” said Kotze.

“It is dangerous to use a cellphone during a robbery as this could agitate the perpetrators. Immediately try and find a sheltered spot and keep low to the ground.”

He also mentioned that it is important to take note of what the suspects are wearing, if they have any tattoos, defining features or if they are wearing any jewellery. “Try to remember what they look like, such as their weight and height.

“And do not shop with large amounts of cash or valuables.”

Kotze said crime is becoming more sophisticated, with inside information playing an increasingly prominent role in crime incidents.

“Do not try and exit via the standard entry and exit points, as these are the same points the robbers will be using. Many malls now have standard operating procedures to lock down the mall during these kinds of incidents.

“Whether you were in the store being robbed or just witnessed the incident in the centre, you should seek counselling – regardless of how you might feel. It often takes some time to experience and deal with the post-traumatic stress following such robberies.”
